A wife’s duties under God.

Posted 12/31/2012

LIVING THE CHRISTIAN LIFE SERIES (Dec 31)

SCRIPTURES:  I Peter 3: 1-6

  • 1 ¶ the same goes for you wives: Be good wives to your husbands, responsive to their needs. There are husbands who, indifferent as they are to any words about God, will be captivated
  • 2 by your life of holy beauty.
  • 3 What matters is not your outer appearance―the styling of your hair, the jewelry you wear, the cut of your clothes―
  • 4 but your inner disposition. Cultivate inner beauty, the gentle, gracious kind that God delights in.
  • 5 The holy women of old were beautiful before God that way, and were good, loyal wives to their husbands.
  • 6 Sarah, for instance, taking care of Abraham, would address him as "my dear husband." You’ll be true daughters of Sarah if you do the same, unanxious and unintimidated.

DEVOTIONAL

Today we read God’s instructions about a wife’s duties under God. Tomorrow we will talk about husbands. Consider these attributes.

  • Be a good wife to your husband by your life of holy beauty.

  • Outer appearance is not more important than your inner disposition. God looks on the inside and at the heart.

  • Cultivate (grow) inner beauty which reflects gentle, gracious attitudes that pleases God.

  • Consider the example of holy women of old that were loyal to their husbands.

Divorce was not an option. The example of Sarah’s treatment of Abraham as she addressed him, “my dear husband.” This was an attitude of affection. Wives you need to develop the same attitude and be at peace, non-combative and uninitiated.  You can be called the “daughters of Sarah” by following her example. Dear Jesus bless the wives as they serve Jesus to their husbands. Amen.

Nothing to Something

Living the Christian Life Series- Dec 30.2012

SCRIPTURE: I PETER 2:

  • 9 But you are the ones chosen by God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to be a holy people, God’s instruments to do his work and speak out for him, to tell others of the night-and-day difference he made for you—
  • 10 from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted.
  • 11 Friends, this world is not your home, so don’t make yourselves cozy in it. Don’t indulge your ego at the expense of your soul.
  • 12 Live an exemplary life among the natives so that your actions will refute their prejudices. Then they’ll be won over to God’s side and be there to join in the celebration when he arrives.
  • 13 ¶ Make the Master proud of you by being good citizens. Respect the authorities, whatever their level;
  • 14 they are God’s emissaries for keeping order.
  • 15 It is God’s will that by doing good, you might cure the ignorance of the fools who think you’re a danger to society.
  • 16 Exercise your freedom by serving God, not by breaking the rules.
  • 17 Treat everyone you meet with dignity. Love your spiritual family. Revere God. Respect the government.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT: “Nothing to Something; Rejected to Accepted”
Did you know that you were picked by God to be on his team? I remember in grade school I was a captain and I had to choose my players and the other captain would choose his players. The best news is that God chooses everybody to be on his team and it’s up to you to sign up. In this scripture we are reminded that we citizens of Gods Kingdom so carry out your assignment. Here are the components of your assignment. Dear God please help us to bring honor to your name. Thank you Jesus.

1.Live an exemplary life; the Christ life.
2.Be a good citizen.
3.Respect authorities.
4.Serve God by not breaking the rules.
5.Treat others with dignity.
6.Love your Spiritual family.
7.Revere God.
8.Respect the government.

THE LIVING STONE

Posted 12/29/2012

SCRIPTURE: 1 PETER 2:1-8

  • 1 ¶ So clean house! Make a clean sweep of malice and pretense, envy and hurtful talk.
  • 2 Now, like infants at the breast, drink deep of God’s pure kindness. Then you’ll grow up mature and whole in God.
  • 3 You’ve had a taste of God.
  • 4 ¶ Welcome to the living Stone, the source of life. The workmen took one look and threw it out; God set it in the place of honor.
  • 5 Present yourselves as building stones for the construction of a sanctuary vibrant with life, in which you’ll serve as holy priests offering Christ-approved lives up to God.
  • 6 The Scriptures provide precedent: Look! I’m setting a stone in Zion, a cornerstone in the place of honor. Whoever trusts in this stone as a foundation will never have cause to regret it.
  • 7 To you who trust him, he’s a Stone to be proud of, but to those who refuse to trust him, The stone the workmen threw out is now the chief foundation stone.
  • 8 For the untrusting it’s…a stone to trip over, a boulder blocking the way. They trip and fall because they refuse to obey, just as predicted.

DEVOTIONAL: “THE LIVING STONE” (Dec 29,2012)

Four pot holes are in the driveway of life and they are named “malice” (intent to do harm), and “envy” (desiring the blessings of another) and “pretense” (acting to be something that you are not), and “hurtful talk” (words designed to hurt another). These holes must be filled with attitudes of righteousness (the actions and positive results of a sound relationship between God and a person.) Christ is the living stone and our very source of life. We are to present ourselves as building stones for the construction of a temple vibrating with life spelled with a capital “L”. So make sure your life is Christ Approved.

Christ answers!

Posted 12/28/2012

SCRIPTURE: I PETER 1:

  • 17 You call out to God for help and he helps―he’s a good Father that way. But don’t forget, he’s also a responsible Father, and won’t let you get by with sloppy living. Your life is a journey you must travel with a deep consciousness of God.
  • 18 It cost God plenty to get you out of that dead-end, empty-headed life you grew up in.
  • 19 He paid with Christ’s sacred blood, you know. He died like an unblemished, sacrificial lamb.
  • 20 And this was no afterthought. Even though it has only lately―at the end of the ages―become public knowledge, God always knew he was going to do this for you.
  • 21  It’s because of this sacrificed Messiah, whom God then raised from the dead and glorified, that you trust God, that you know you have a future in God.
  • 22 Now that you’ve cleaned up your lives by following the truth, love one another as if your lives depended on it.
  • 23 Your new life is not like your old life. Your old birth came from mortal sperm; your new birth comes from God’s living Word. Just think: a life conceived by God himself!

DEVOTIONAL: Christ answered the rich young ruler’s question of how to be saved? He said with compassion in his eye, “ye must be born again!” We are reminded in these scriptures that God had a plan for your life from the beginning. This plan can only be known by experiencing the new birth. If you trust God you have a future. Real life begins with Jesus and the gospel of John tells us, “In the beginning was the word and without Him was not anything made.” Did you catch it, “The Word”? As we approach the New Year remember new birth only comes from God’s Living Word. Do you want a life then choose Jesus. He waits at your heart’s door for you to invite Him In to your life and follow truth, love one another and love God for his love for you. Amen

Get ready to work!

Posted Dec., 12-27-12

Scripture: I Peter 1:10-16

10 ¶ the prophets who told us this was coming asked a lot of questions about this gift of life God was preparing.
11 The Messiah’s Spirit let them in on some of it—that the Messiah would experience suffering, followed by glory. They clamored to know who and when.
12 All they were told was that they were serving you, you who by orders from heaven have now heard for yourselves—through the Holy Spirit—the Message of those prophecies fulfilled. Do you realize how fortunate you are? Angels would have given anything to be in on this!
13 ¶ so roll up your sleeves, put your mind in gear, be totally ready to receive the gift that’s coming when Jesus arrives.
14 Don’t lazily slip back into those old grooves of evil, doing just what you feel like doing. You didn’t know any better than; you do now.
15 As obedient children, let yourselves be pulled into a way of life shaped by God’s life, a life energetic and blazing with holiness.
16 God said, "I am holy; you be holy."

“FUTURE BEGINS NOW!!!

SCRIPTURE: I Peter 1:2-5

2 God the Father has his eye on each of you, and has determined by the work of the Spirit to keep you obedient through the sacrifice of Jesus. May everything good from God be yours!
3 ¶ What a God we have! And how fortunate we are to have him, this Father of our Master Jesus! Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we’ve been given a brand-new life and have everything to live for,
4 including a future in heaven—and the future starts now!
5 God is keeping careful watch over us and the future. The Day is coming when you’ll have it all—life healed and whole.

Devotional by Pastor Glen Aycock.

The gifts of Jesus surpasses all gifts. Let’s review the gifts mentioned in I Peter 1:2-5. Here is the list.
1.We have the gift of a new life. No longer dead in sin but born again. (verse 3)
2.Life is worth living thanks to Jesus.(verse 3b)
3.We have a future and it starts now in our heart. We know where we are going. Hallelujah.
4.God is keeping watch over us. He will never leave us alone or forsaken.
5.God is preparing to give us healing from our infirmities and make us whole. When pastoring a Baptist church in Bullhead City, Arizona I made a house visit to a lady crippled up and twisted like a pretzel. But her spirit was not twisted, instead she triumphantly whispered, “Pastor the day is coming when my twisted body will stretch out and I will be whole by the touch of Jesus I am starting to sing praises now.”

Today let that be you attitude and let’s praise the Lord for the gift of LIFE WITH A CAPITAL “L”. Amen.”

DON'T GROW WEARY

DON'T GROW WEARY

(By Glen Aycock)

SCRIPTURE: I CORINTHIANS 15:58

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

DEVOTIONAL ( number 5 in fishing series by Glen Aycock)

One of the principles of being good fishermen, is consistency. Last year I carried a fishing license in my wallet. I was legal and I had the equipment but I only caught two fish. (one was a throw away). I think I know the reason for the small number of fish. It would have been a different story in all likelihood if I had gone fishing more than once. This year I have a new license and a new opportunity to go often. I expect to catch more fish. The same analogy could be applied to being fishers of men. More souls can be saved if we consistently share Jesus with the lost. It is imperative that we not give up but that by every possible deed of service we throw the salvation line out into the masses of people who need the Lord. Don't quit or get discouraged, do your part and Christ will do his part. Bring the wandering ones to Jesus. I leave you with this example:
"After struggling to develop a viable electric light bulb for months and months, Thomas Edison was interviewed by a young reporter who boldly asked Mr. Edison if he felt like failure and if he thought he should give up now? Perplexed Edison replied, "Young man, why would I feel like a failure and why would I give up? I now know definitely over 9000 ways that an electric light bulb will not work and success is almost in my grasp. In the next month he was successful."

PRAYER THOUGHT: Dear Jesus, help us to consistently labor for souls. Amen."

The Fish Are Biting

Posted Dec 4, 2012

The Fish Are Biting- devotional 4

(Joe Alain is Pastor of First Baptist Church of Port Allen, LA.)

SCRIPTURE: II CORINTHIANS 9:6

¶ But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.

Jesus guided the disciples to where the fish were located. With His eyes they could see the fish schooling. He will do the same for us. If we will look with Jesus' eyes we will see the people who are in need all around us. Jesus says to us, "I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest" (John 4:35). Fishing is a bit like farming. You see results in proportion to the work that you put into the endeavor. This principle of sowing and reaping is variously stated and illustrated in Scripture. Paul expressed this principle clearly in2 Corinthians 9:6, "Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously."

I have a friend who is an avid fisherman. I am always impressed and sometimes envious of his great catches. "Why do I not have similar results?" I think. Then, I remind myself that if I fished as often and as passionately as my friend, I would obviously catch more fish. It's hard to be a successful fisherman when you're boat serves more time as a leaf bin and when you're fishing consists of one or two outings a year!

When the disciples followed Jesus' instructions (John 20:6) they caught so many fish that the net could not be brought in. This great catch of fish gave the disciples a foretaste of what God was going to do through them as "fishers of men." Just imagine the possibilities of what God could do for us if we will faithfully follow Him!

As Christians we are to cast repeatedly our nets into the world and expect a catch. Our nets will be varied because it takes different baits to catch different fish. We can't always use the same methods of catching fish that have always worked. If worms are not doing the trick you try crickets. God did not call us to just "wet a line." He called us to catch men. We must do whatever it takes to reach people because the devil and the world sure is! Consider this. We fish for men to save men. In a sense we really are catch and release fisherman. The devil fishes for men to fry them, to condemn them for eternity. We catch them so that God can release them from sin and bondage. Are you ready to go do some fishing? Grab your pole. Get your tackle ready. Set some priority time aside. Follow Jesus to the river bank and expect a great catch! "Come, follow me, . . . and I will make you fishers of men" (Matt. 4:19).

COMMENTS BY GLEN AYCOCK

Fishing for men takes a willingness to dedicate time to the task. That time starts on our knees praying for the power of God to come down upon your effort. God has promised us to give us power for the task. Not only does He give power but His Holy Spirit directs us and arranges the contact with souls that need to be saved. Satan stays very busy trying to counter our determination to follow Christ commands. Often he says “this isn’t the right time or situation.” Another favorite tactic is to convince a person they are inadequate to tell somebody about God and it’s not their business. Friends God has ordered that our churches be out on assignment and confronting people with the opportunity to be saved. Don’t listen to the enemy but instead rise up and represent Christ. Remember the first order of business is to share what Christ can do to change a person’s life and save them from Spiritual death. Remember now is the day of salvation and there is going to be that moment which unknown to us when the last soul will be saved and Christ will return to gather them. Don’t delay and don’t wait to share today about Christ our Savior with anybody that will listen. We are not responsible for their lack of decision but our responsibility is to leave a witness.

Prayer Thought:  Dear Jesus help us to remember that “People Need the Lord.”

Fishing Series –Number 3

Posted Dec 1, 2012

Fishing Series –Number 3

(Sermon outline excerpt of "Gone Fishing!" byJoe Alain)

SCRIPTURE: JOHN 4: 35-38

35 “Do you not say, ’There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!
36 “And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.
37 “For in this the saying is true: ’One sows and another reaps.’
38 “I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labors."
SCRIPTURE: 2 Corinthians 9:6,
"Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.”
Fishing in the Wrong Pond
And then sometimes we do fish earnestly, as the disciples, but we are simply fishing in the wrong place. We are toiling and catching nothing. Our nets are being thrown out but they are coming up empty. Why? We may be fishing in the wrong place. The disciples didn't see the school of fish all around them until Jesus guided them. The truth is that we can toil but if we are not fishing in the right place our nets will continue to come up empty.
The problem is not declining fish stocks. The problem is that we do not see the fish and go after them with the right bait. It takes three things to be successful fisherman and likewise fishers of men. It takes knowledge of where the fish are. It takes the right bait. It takes time — translated patience. Healthy and growing churches that are penetrating a lost world are churches that are sensitive to the needs of people around them and they are leaving their comfort zone and traditions to reach people. You've probably heard of John Ortberg's book, If You Want to Walk on Water, You've Got to Get Out of the Boat. I suggest that the church may need to get out of the boat that has been stuck on a spiritual sandbar for too long in order to wade out into the waters where the fish are schooling. Then we will cast our nets and bring in a great catch that will be nothing short of miraculous!
In  John 20:4  we are told that Jesus called out to the disciples and asked them essentially this question, "have you caught any fish?" At least the disciples were honest fisherman. This was one fish story that was true. They had not caught anything! The Lord is asking us the same question. Church, "how's your fishing?" This is the measure of the faithfulness of the church. Not our inspiring buildings, or our impressive budgets, or our impassioned boastings. But our fishing! How many souls have we caught? How many disciples of Christ are we making? And we need to be painfully honest about the success or failure of our fishing trips.

The Fish Are Biting

Jesus guided the disciples to where the fish were located. With His eyes they could see the fish schooling. He will do the same for us. If we will look with Jesus' eyes we will see the people who are in need all around us. Jesus says to us, "I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest" (John 4:35). Fishing is a bit like farming. You see results in proportion to the work that you put into the endeavor. This principle of sowing and reaping is variously stated and illustrated in Scripture. Paul expressed this principle clearly in  2 Corinthians 9:6, "Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously."

PRAYER SUGGESTION: Dear Jesus show us where to fish and where they are biting. Help us find souls for you. Amen.
